Debt forgiveness

The US Federal government announced today that it is taking steps to identify the 400,000 disabled Americans who are eligible to have their student loans wiped. Not only are these people eligible to apply for a full discharge of their debt, but the government is taking steps to find them and guide them through the process.

In New Zealand there are no such exemptions for disabled people. When people, through no fault of their own, cannot afford to pay their student loan debt, shouldn't there be ways for them to get help at this level, that don't involve bankruptcy?

If America can help those who genuinely need it, then why not us?
