The IRD recently announced that it has tracked down an additional 57,000 Australian resident student loan debtors, whose whereabouts were previously unknown. The IRD's new ability to find Australian resident debtors stems from its information sharing agreement with the Australian Tax Office.

As one of these so called debtors my life has been turned upside down in 24 hours. I left NZ in 1998 under the impression my student loan had been completed. The loan was for 5.5 k initially, repayments totalling 4600 have been accepted as made by IRD. The rub, only now have I discovered that my then employer either failed to forward deductions to IRD from August 1997 to June 1998, or that the IRD have somehow screwed their records up. This has resulted in over 10k of penaltys being added.
