Student loan debt arrest

24/1/2016

For many months the IRD has had a long list of overseas resident student loan debtors that they are ready to arrest if they return to New Zealand. The first arrest happened this week. It is reported that the debtor owed around $20,000. Many student loan debtors owe much more than this.

The arrest is a reminder to not delay getting your student loan sorted out. And to do so well before you plan to travel back to New Zealand. Please contact us if you would like help.

Hi, my brother was made aware of a student loan from 2001 in 2014 when he flew home to NZ for family matters. He disputed the loan but made a voluntary payment of $1000 as he was afraid he would not be able to return home to Australia.

His dispute is that he started a course but with the first 14 days he left. My brother cannot read or write and advised his tutor of this but was provided with no support to do the course in metal fabrication. He advised his tutor he would not be doing the course as he did not have adequate support to do it. He was not advised that he had to complete documentation to release him from the course, not that he would have been able to complete it without assistance anyway. 14 years later he was contacted by baycorp. My father has been going backwards and forwards between study link, ird and baycorp with no solutions or assistance in the matter. Study link have no documentation on the matter to clarify what happened as it is too old. The loan has now tripled in value, and is still disputed as my brother left within the first 14 days due to no support from tutors who are supposed to help. Can you offer any assistance in this matter as it is now taking its toll on my brother and my elderly parents trying to resolve a debt which never should have been incurred.
