What advice would you give?

What advice would you give to your younger self about student loan debt and dealing with it?

Would you still study? Would you have done a different course? Would you have made the same decisions about going overseas or not? Would you have tried harder to get on top of the debt at a younger age, or gone bankrupt sooner?

What advice would you give to the IRD? We think there are far better win/win solutions that could be looked at, that would not only encourage fairer payment resolutions but decrease the number of student loan bankruptcies. We know that many of you are very angry about your student loan debt and your dealings with the IRD and the New Zealand government. What advice would you give to them?

We would love to hear your stories and thoughts.

It would be a good idea to make overseas borrowers loans interest free if they were keeping up with their payment obligations. It would encourage those who are not paying as it would give them hope that if they start paying they could stop the demoralising compounding interest and also encourage those who are paying to pay off their debts faster.

I could not agree more with Damian Cairns' comment! Being slapped with hideous interest fees on-top of the compulsory payment requirement - despite already meeting these annual payments requirements- is completely unfair, especially given that most NZ graduates flee overseas for better career opportunities, and to make use of the education they are now struggling to pay back.
